iDesign Thinking What Does it Involve?l

“User Experience”, “Pain Point”, “MVP”, “Prototype”… these concepts are raised time and time again for those who are interested in the world of startups & innovation. Yet, above and beyond the buzzwords, all these notions carry the same message: if you wish to create valuable products or services, you simply must focus on the real problem to be solved, maintain constant iteration with your market, listen to your users, understand their experience, and co-build with them… In simple terms: descend from your ivory tower and empower yourself with real experience!

With experience mentoring startups since 2011, NUMA applies a hybrid methodology at the crossroads between Design Thinking and Lean Startup methodology to help the creation of innovative products and services.

This training course in Design Thinking revolves around 3 principles:

  • Empathizing with users at the heart of the design process
  • Going from idea to prototype in short phases
  • Maintaining constant iteration in the improvement of the product, based on feedback from the changing behavior of users.

Whether we wish to explore a market opportunity or have an idea for a product or a service: our process is one of progressive validation of hypotheses, requiring minimal investment, with a fast moving timeline.

iWhat is Design Thinking?l

A two day workshop that covers all the steps from user research to idea prototyping and pitching and will give users practical tools that they will be able to reuse in their business.

Our approach to Design Thinking combines User Centric Design techniques for understanding users, collecting their feedback, and Lean Startup techniques to turn User insights into quick prototypes that address a real life goal.

As a startup organization, we keep things grounded in reality and focused on real business impact and examples.

You leave this training course with a greater understanding of user-focused innovation methods. At the end of this Design Thinking training course, you will know how to:

  • develop empathetic relationships with users
  • lead interviews and/or conduct field observations
  • define a user pathway and identify any pain points in the experience
  • use ideation-based creative methods
  • define and/or construct a low-cost prototype
  • pitch convincingly to top management

Workshop – practical experience:
Case studies: immersion – being in a startup!
Planning your user search
Developing an empathetic relationship with your users

Analyzing your field data, going back over the user pathway, identifying and selecting a “pain point”

Day 2

Design a tailor-made solution
Prototype your MVP
Pitch your solution

Debrief: How can you apply these methods within your companies?

Tools that you use: proto-personas, maintenance guides, storyboards, design studios, MVPs etc.

Allie Mahler

Allie is the founder of Community X Design, and formerly worked for IDEO. Community x Design (Community "by" Design) is a design & strategy firm that works with leaders across industries to ask "what's possible?" in the face of uncertainty. We design experiences, build programming, & deliver workshops to a wide variety of organizations, academic institutions, non-profits and Fortune 500 companies. Our main theory of change centers around designing for different levels of engagement across a community to help individuals feel a sense of collective impact and purpose.

Jay Melone

Jay started his career at Accenture where he spent 7 years applying digital solutions using anything but design thinking + design sprints. Things were slow and inefficient. As he transitioned from writing code to leading technology teams (including his own startup), he adopted a toolkit of digital innovation mindsets, practices, and frameworks.

Now, as the Strategy Partner at New Haircut, and one of their design thinking facilitators, he helps people, teams, companies, and communities evolve from talking about innovation to achieving it.
